Ethics Services

Ethics Services at St. Paul’s Hospital provide guidance and support when health care decisions become complex. Grounded in faith and compassion, we help patients, families and care teams navigate care with integrity and respect.
St. Paul’s Hospital supports Ethics Services throughout the Saskatchewan Health authority (SHA). For information on the SHA’s collaborative Ethics program, visit the Saskatchewan Health Authority Ethics page.
We support patients, families, staff, and physicians who are facing complex decisions in health care. Anyone can reach out for a confidential consult during regular business hours by contacting the St. Paul’s Hospital ethicist at 306-655-5197 or mary.heilman@saskhealthauthority.ca. Some common issues include the use of feeding tubes, patient consent and capacity, and care at the end-of-life.
We offer individual consultations, advance care planning support, workshops, and a range of educational resources. See the links below for more resources:
Ethics Services at St. Paul’s are informed by a faith-based approach to care that honours the spiritual, cultural, and moral values of our diverse community. Rooted in Catholic health care tradition, our support is inclusive, respectful, and person-centred. The St. Paul’s ethicist works in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s Ethics team to enrich the care of all.
