Spiritual Care

Spiritual Care is at the heart of holistic healing at St. Paul’s Hospital. Through compassionate presence, meaningful connection, active listening and inclusive support, we help patients and families find strength and peace during vulnerable times.

Spiritual care offers space for reflection, comfort, and connection. Whether through quiet presence, conversation, prayer, or sacred space, our team supports the emotional and spiritual well-being of all who walk through our doors.

The root of the word “spirit” comes from the Latin word meaning “breath” or “wind”.  When someone comes to the hospital, their breath is affected whether it be due to some physical ailment or emotional, personal stress.  Therefore, we support patients, families, and staff from all spiritual and religious backgrounds, as well as those with a secular worldview, throughout their health care journey. Whether someone is seeking prayer, conversation, or simply a quiet moment, we’re here to help.

We offer a range of spiritual care services and sacred spaces designed to support well-being, reflection, and connection, no matter your beliefs or background. These services include:

  • Bedside spiritual care and compassionate presence
  • Multi-faith and culturally responsive support
  • Access to sacred spaces, including:
    • The Hospital Chapel
    • Multi-faith Stillness Room
    • First Nations Prayer and Ceremonial Room
    • Quiet Rooms throughout the hospital
  • A nationally accredited Spiritual Care Education Program for future spiritual care practitioners.

Rooted in holistic care and inspired by the legacy of Marguerite d’Youville, our team of trained Spiritual Care professionals honours the spiritual, emotional, and cultural needs of every person. We work closely with patients and families to ensure care is inclusive, meaningful, and guided by compassion.
